ANDY WARHOL AND ROY LICHTENSTEIN CAME TO HIM. JEFF KOONS HAD HIM FLOWN IN TO NEW YORK. THEY ALL WANTED WALTER MAURER FOR THE SAME THING – HIS SKILL WITH A SPRAY GUN.

WALTER MAURER, THE VARNISH WHISPERER

To anyone who has ever watched him at work, he is the undisputed king of lacquer – Walter Maurer (76). For over 50 years, he has been honing his lacquered art. In fact, he founded this particular art movement. With a unique spraying technique, ingenious colour gradients and a steady hand, Maurer lends a new veneer to objects ranging from car doors to Boeing jets, from Formula One cars to Eurofighters. Think big(ger)? No problem! Now Maurer is turning the entire Munich flagship store into a walk-in work of art.

In collaboration with BOGNER, the lacquer artist is taking on a new challenge. True to the motto, “Art can move mountains”, Maurer and interior specialists Holzrausch in collaboration with design agency Heinzelman Ayadi (OHA) will be creating a panoramic high-alpine winter mountainscape. The idea isn't merely to paint the walls and change the look of the store, but to blur the lines between shop design and furniture, turning the entire space into a two-storey Gesamtkunstwerk. The goal is to visualise the brand's close connections with mountain style and to offer customers an atmospheric alpine experience almost as good as the real thing.

Outside, visitors are enjoying the summer in the city, between Munich's opera house and the former royal residence, but inside the BOGNER store, there’s work to be done. Willy Bogner, CEO Andreas Baumgärtner, Walter Maurer and a team of creatives are having an animated discussion on the second floor. In front of them, in the men's department, Maurer and the interior designers of Munich studio Holzrausch have delivered the first sampler of their collaboration. Overnight an elaborate alpine skyline has arisen on the wall behind the jackets and waistcoats. It is populated with the typical slope signage, warning signposts and a mysterious lacquered cube. You can almost taste the “ARTdrenaline” in the air. What's next? Find out in the coming weeks – stay tuned and B excited!
