Let the Races Begin

Marking the start of ski season, the Ski World Cup starts Saturday, October 22nd in Sölden!

Marking the beginning of ski season, the 2017 Ski World Cup opener starts this Saturday, October 22nd, with the men’s and women’s giant slalom events. Professional skiers from national ski teams worldwide will be flocking to Austria’s historic alpine venue for the big race, including the elite athletes of the German Ski Association (DSV). Returning to the DSV roster and the World Cup races this year are several star German athletes, including Olympic gold-medalist Viktoria Rebensburg, GS-ace Stefan Luitz and technique-master Linus Strasser.

Rebensburg started off her pro career with a bang in 2010 by snatching the gold in the Olympic giant slalom at Whistler. Later that year she went on to take gold in the giant slalom at the World Cup opener, also in Sölden that year, and clenched the giant slalom season title for 2011 with two more wins. Rebensburg has performed impressively every year since.

Stefan Luitz has proved himself a promising young talent, and would have won the giant slalom at the World Cup at Beaver Creek last year, had he not suffered an unfortunate fall at the last second – we have high hopes for him this year though! Linus Strasser, like Luitz, is a young talent showing great promise: At last year’s World Cup he achieved an impressive 10th place in the slalom, and is considered the team’s technique pro.

Making Stars Shine Brighter

Every year since 1952, Bogner has enjoyed the honor of outfitting DSV athletes, coaches and staff, and this year is no exception. The task is never an easy one: The skiwear does a lot more that represent German athletic-chic – it also has to perform on race day. This year’s gear follows an innovative layering-concept, giving the athletes full control over their body temperatures whether they’re hard at work on the slopes, waiting at the starting line or standing on the podium.

In terms of style, the new gear features gold and silver zippers, discreetly suggestive of medals, and superhero-style honeycomb print on the first- and second-layers. Bogner’s iconic flame design, a longtime symbol of the DSV, is back in all new colours. The men will be speeding down the slopes licked by blue flames, while the women will be bringing the heat in hot pink.

The new gear was given its first test-run with the DSV athletes for a training session on the Hintertux glacier this past summer. Renowned photographer Peter Mathis was there with his crew at the ready, to capture stunning photographs of the athletes and the gear in action. Unsurprisingly, the new team-wear was met with very positive reception. “I had to get used to the intensity of the colours at first, but once I tried the outfits on, I immediately felt very comfortable,” said Viktoria Rebensburg during the test training. In addition to the normal ski jackets and pants, the new official race suits made their debut at Hintertux as well. There’s no doubt that the DSV athletes will shine on the slopes – and hopefully the podiums – this season! Best of luck to them all!
