“Body Art”: Young, Wild, Skiing Art

The ski suit as canvas – water lily ponds and crystalline ice peaks, golden nuggets, and graphic spirals blossom on white BOGNER overalls. In 1985, inspired by the young graffiti and breakdance culture, as well as the works of Keith Harings, Willy Bogner Jr invited nine artists from the “Junge Wilde” (young wild ones) scene to transform white ski suits into creative one-offs for the “Body Art” project.

Jiri “Georg” Dokoupil painted a cheerful sun on the backside, Günther Förg decorated his suit in “blue and orange”, and Walter Dahn made an ironic self-portrait using a paintbrush as a ski pole. Salomé, Hans Peter Adamski, Andreas Schulze and Anne Jud created other head-turning pieces. However, the artworks were too valuable for the ski slope, and they were exhibited in the famous Sabine Knust gallery in Munich.

This close relationship between BOGNER and the art world continues to this day. In 2018 for example, Walter Maurer, the lacquer artist from Dachau, designed the walls of the BOGNER premises in Munich. And for the FIRE+ICE Fall/Winter 2021 collection a collaboration with Jean-Vincent Simonet was set in place. The artist created a Capsule Collection, for which he processed analogue photographs of the FIRE+ICE freeskier Nalu Nussbaum with innovative abstraction and collage techniques.
